Gleccserek

A maori legenda szerint egy szeretojét sirató lány könnyei fagytak össze, így született a gleccser. Kora reggel még tiszta idoben elindultunk a Franz Joseph gleccser alsó végéhez. A gleccser napi átlagos 1,5m sebességgel mozog lefelé. A fizetos túrák nagyon lehúzósak meg már amúgy is jártunk gleccseren, szóval a helikopteres mókát kihagytuk és csak követtünk egy csoportot. A szuper veszélyes helyen csak sziklákon mászkáltunk és átkeltünk néhány patakon. A gleccser alsó része koszos szürkés volt, de így is lenyugözó. Visszafelé az ido már kezdett rosszabbra fordulni.
Kicsit odébb, a Fox gleccsernél a felhok annyira összegyultek, hogy semmit sem láttunk. Pont jó idoben körbejártuk a Matheson tavat, de a híres képeslapfotó nem sikerült, mert nem látszottak a havas csúcsok. Szakadó esoben vágtunk neki a 300km napi adagnak és imádkoztunk hogy "ping-hitch-kanga-ru" (a kocsi, amelyik utálja a hegymenetet) kibírja a legmeredekebb új-zélandi utat. Szerencsére csak egyszer forrt fel. Wanakában kb egy óra alatt sikerült szállást találnunk, mert a sátoros turisták többsége bemenekült a helyi hostelekbe az óránként 25mmes eso elol.

Glacier country
The maori legend says that a girl was crying because the loss of her lover and her frozen tears had created the glacier. Early morning we left in clear weather to the Franz Joseph glacier terminal. This ice river is moving by the speed of 1.5m a day. The tours are pretty expensive and since we have already been hiking on a glacier in Italy we skipped the pay option. Though we have followed a group to the terminal face. This place is singed to be very dangerous but we were just walking on the rocks and crossing creeks. The lower part of the glacier is dirty grey but it is still a stunning sight.Further on at the Fox glacier it was so cloudy that we couldn't see anything. Just in time we walked around Lake Matheson, but we didn't have the panoramic view because all snowpeaks were covered in clouds.
Later it started raining heavily, so we got in the car and started the 300 kms targeted for the day while praying that 'ping-hitch-kanga-ru' would the steepest road of NZ, namely the Haast pass. She got over heated only once :) Arriving to Wanaka it took us an hour to find accommodation since all campers escaped into the hostels from the rain.
